According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 80% of the world’s sexually active population has contracted HPV at some point in their lives.
Of that percentage, only some women are at risk of developing cervical cancer. Recent studies suggest that a diet rich in vitamin A may prevent this problem and combat HPV and warts.
Why is vitamin A good for HPV?
According to a study published in the Journal of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, vitamin A is metabolized as retinoic acid when it enters the body. Retinoic acid interacts with cell nuclei.
It is related to the genes responsible for activating the mechanisms that stop the development of cancer cells. Additionally, the same genes also facilitate the programmed death of these sick cells, which in medicine is called apoptosis.
Furthermore, vitamin A is crucial for fighting infections, like HPV, because it promotes the production of lymphocytes and white blood cells. When an infection like HPV is developing in your body, the level of vitamin A drops, causing deficiencies in your immune system.
From the study mentioned in the previous paragraph, it is inferred that a diet based on foods rich in vitamin A helps your immune system to be stronger to face a disease like HPV.
It also favors tissue regeneration in lesions caused by the disease, even in those that are high risk and can cause cervical cancer.
Vitamin A is present in foods in two different forms, preformed which is found in animal products. The second option is provitamin A and it is the one contained in fruits and vegetables.
How much vitamin A for warts?
There is no predetermined amount of vitamin A intake to get rid of warts.
However, it is recommended that adult men consume 900 mcg of vitamin A per day and adult women 700 mcg.
What foods are rich in vitamin A?
There are many groups of foods that are rich in preformed vitamin A to treat HPV and warts, such as:
- Fish
- Animal offal like liver
- Eggs
- Dairy products
In addition, your body can transform carotenoids into vitamin A (provitamin A). Carotenoids are present in fruits and vegetables and are what give them their characteristic color of green, red, yellow, and other colors.
The carotenoid that transforms into vitamin A is beta-carotene and it is found in:
- Vegetables and greens, like carrots, broccoli, spinach, sweet potato or pumpkin, to name a few.
- Fruits like melon or mangoes
- Nuts like walnuts and almonds
- Fortified cereals
